Attractive Peugeot 3008 Crossover – A smaller and less gaudy Audi Q5

Peugeot 3008 Crossover - 48mpgUS combined on the NEDC when properly equipped.

Throughout the years, Peugeot has produced vehicles that have won on the track, won French consumers via their pocketbooks and they even had a hand in co-designing Ford’s European Focus and Fiesta’s 1.6L super diesels. What they have not done over the years however was produce an attractive vehicle from an American perspective. With the introduction of the Peugeot 3008 Crossover, that problem has now been alleviated.

The Peugeot 3008 is a compact yet spacious crossover that was designed to appeal to Consumers across multiple market segments. With its modern styling, tall seating position and fuel efficient underpinnings, the 3008 is a marriage between a small American SUV and the European MPV or hatchback.

The vehicles strengths include its large occupant and cargo capacity while at the same time adopting a number of new technologies.

Propulsion

The 3008 can be equipped with a variety of turbocharged and direct injected gas or diesel engines plus a 5-speed manual, a 6-speed manual or a 6-speed automated manualtransmission. The most fuel efficient consists of a 1.6L turbo-diesel using the very the latest high pressure common rail with high pressure piezo injectors and a variable vane turbocharger. The 1.6L HDi turbo-diesel coupled to the 6-speed automated manual transmission allows the 3008 an NEDC rating of 48 mpgUS while still achieving 60 mph in less than 12 seconds.

Safety

Besides the standard front, side and side curtains, the 3008 includes Stability Control, Traction Control, Hill Assist, ABS, Electronic Brake Force Distribution, Brake Assist and a tire pressure monitoring system.

In addition, the Electronic Stability Program can control the vehicle in 4-separate modes.
  • Standard mode - ESP is calibrated for a low level of wheel slip based on different
grip levels normally experienced on roads.
  • Snow mode - Adapts its strategy to provide the best grip conditions for each of the front
wheels when the car is pulling away.
  • All-terrain mode (mud, dirt track, wet grass, etc) - Allows a high level of slip on the least stable wheel when pulling away to encourage the elimination of mud and improve grip. At the same time, the wheel with the strongest grip level is given as much torque as possible. The torque offset between the front wheels can be as much as 100%, well above the limits set for a limited slip differential (LSD).
  • Sand mode - Allows slight wheel slip on both drive wheels simultaneously, to allow the vehicle to make headway and reduce the risk of getting stuck in the sand. Here too, the effect created by this mode is superior to that of a LSD system.
Secondary safety is based on optimized structure including three impact absorption channels at the front and the first of its kind, Bogé impact absorbers allowing impact resistance and crush space while allowing a short front overhang.

Finally, Peugeot has included an Emergency service which can pinpoint the vehicle’s location and dispatch emergency services in the event of an incident.

The only safety feature missing that is finally becoming common throughout North America is front driver and passenger Active Headrests.

Interior comfort and convenience features

On the interior technology front, the 3008 is certainly not lacking. An all-new Heads-up display with information projected from the rear of the instrument panel onto an anti-reflective translucent polycarbonate panel. The driver has the choice to display speed, speed limiter and a new Distance Alert system warning the driver if he or she is getting to close to the vehicle ahead for a given speed.

A very modern and pleasing to the eye cockpit with available leather and heated everything greets the driver and passengers. Given the 5-door hatch/lift gate design and split folding rear seats, accommodations for almost every contingency are as easy as folding down a seat or two.

Other standard and optional features infotainment additions include a 6-disc CD player/changer, MP3/CD audio input jack, RCA Audio and Video input jacks in the glove box for an available high resolution display, SD card input for WMA/MP3 digital playback, USB audio input jack, 10GB Jukebox storage, 40GB NAVI unit, GSM services for full cel phone connectivity as well as a base Bluetooth for std. hands free operation.
